According to "Beyond Blue" 3 million Australians suffer from this mental illness.
Depression and anxiety affects everyday people just like you and me.
Today it is more talked about than ever before, however in my eyes it is still not talked about ENOUGH.
Have you ever come across a person that appears happy and chirpy every single day at work?
Maybe you have run into someone at the gym who is the most energetic person in the room?
Don't be fooled by that smile!
This same person may be going through the worst of times, possibly going through a mental illness that has no instant fix. You may ask them "How are you?" and their response may be "I'm fine" or "I am well" , yet deep down they may not really feel this way. Underneath the smile, there lies a dark world in which they do not like to talk about or are not aware themselves of why they feel the way they do.
Well I must remind you, Depression is more common today than you think. I would say it is like any other disease eg: Heart Disease, Diabetes, Cancer... but it is not talked about with hype like a dangerous disease . I call depression the "invisible disease". . It is an ongoing battle and only the person themselves can ask for help and realise it symptoms unless someone has been watching you all day all night . The signs of the mental illness does appear on your body like measles or mumps, there is no physical sign of it, and this is why it is 'invisible' to those around us.
Here are some of the symptoms of Depression that every day people like you and me may experience on a daily basis if they suffer from this illness:
If you think you may have this disease, than do what I did and don't hold back. I urge you to go and see a GP. The GP will than refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist.
If you would like to know more about Depression, or know someone who is going through this right now , I suggest going to this website : http://www.beyondblue.org.au/. You will get a better idea of the illness and please spread the word!! The more people are aware of this , the more chances someone who is suffering from this illness will resort to help. and not suicide.
Just Remember:
You will never walk alone.
There IS light at the end of the tunnel. It is a dark battle, but I assure you the tiny light you may see.... is worth fighting for. You might not see it now, but you will eventually.
If there are others going through it and seeking help, so can you!
